    Market Weston's best kept secret

    We don't want you all to know about this pub because it's busy enough as it is but we just had a tasty and great value home made lunch here, two courses for £5.70. The bill for four was under thirty pounds - including four drinks from a selection of guest and house ales. We had plaice and chips, chicken veronique (a bit like chicken supreme with grapes, but we didn't find any grapes in ours...) peach mousse with Archers, and bread pudding. There was a dish of fresh veg each; a choice of mashed, chipped or sauted potatoes, and custard or cream on the puddings. When the puddings ran out they put on new ones - hot chocolate pudding or whisky and raspberry trifle. This is how to fill up a pub or restaurant - very friendly staff welcoming lots of older local people who were brought up on this kind of home-made food and who know how good it is.

    The Spice Girls

    At the Menta Trade Fair and Food and Drink Expo at Ickworth today we tasted various offerings but our favourite was the curry from 'Our House of Spice'. Two lovely sisters, Nadia and Julia, who make ready meal curries and spices you can cook with at home. Lovely presentation, hot food to try and smiling faces to sell it.     The Sutton Plough

    It's a long drive for us but inspector x drove, so I had three glasses of cava and a sloe gin at this evening's launch event at The Plough, near the coast and only three miles from Woodbridge. There was generous hospitality from Ruth the landlady, introducing her new chef Jerome and the autumn menu to a group of foodie friends and supporters. We ate mini-burgers, toad in the hole, welsh rarebit and fish and chip canapes, followed by mini strawberry pavlovas and treacle tarts.

    Cake from the Co-op

    The Wheaten Mill in Elmsett made this and they sell through the Co-Op (and probably other places too). It was nearly as good as our own home-made coffee cake and looks just the same. A bit less icing and more coffee flavour and it would have been perfect, but much much nicer than most shop bought cakes if you can't be bothered or run out of time to make one to have with your cup of tea.

    Street food at The Suffolk Show

    I just got in from a day at The Suffolk Show and have to tell you about E8, a new Suffolk street food trader. I had the shoulder of lamb in a rosemary brioche bun with homemade relishes, salad and pickled shallots.  The only thing that came in on the back of a lorry was the Colmans mustard, and even us Ipswich Town supporters can just about allow that. You'll find them in Eat Street at the show tomorrow.

    Love food Hate waste

    More food is wasted at Christmas than at any other time of the year.  An estimated 74 million mince pies and two million turkeys will be carted off by the dustmen.     Marmalade

    I have run out of my Seville orange marmalade so have made myself a small batch of easy four fruit marmalade until the new seasons Sevilles arrive.

    I used clementines, limes, grapefruit and lemons for my Christmas special! Just subsitute what ever citrus fruit you fancy and use this recipe

    Turn up the heat!

    Wow.  I have just made sweet chilli prawns with a recipe sent by the Suffolk Chilli Company, using their Extra Hot sweet chilli sauce. The sauce really is extra hot, it reminds me of the fiery Durban curry called Mother in Laws Tongue.  Needs a little respect! Look out for the recipe on our new Dish of the Day.
